BREAKING: Wednesday, January 13, 2009
AroundTheTrackOnline.com has learned that The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company has signed and exclusive naming rights agreement with the Historical North Wilkesboro Spee

dway. Sources describe the deal as multi-year.
The agreement, expected to be formally announced later this afternoon, is another in a series of announcement that will take the track from nearly dormant to a very busy season of racing in 2010. A number of regional series have schedule races at the track and recently the Buck Baker Racing School would have at least 12 dates at the track.
North Wilkesboro Speedway was one of the original tracks on the NASCAR schedule in 1949 – the first season of what would become NASCAR Sprint Cup Series racing. The track, built in 1946 as a dirt track, actually hosted events prior to NASCAR.
For 48 years the Cup series competed at the tough .625-mile speedway hosting the final race there in a 1996. Other than some private test sessions and a few television productions, the facility has sat idle most of the time since then.
In October a press conference was held at the speedway announcing the group Speedway Associates would be operating the track. Attending the conference were Junior Johnson, Bobby and Donnie Allison, Ned Jarrett and MRN Radio’s Barney Hall among others.
In December, a music video to promote the upcoming movie Red Dirt Rising was shot at the speedway. The single “Carolina Moonshine” by Matt Dylan is set for release soon and the video includes NASCAR Hall of Fame Inductee Junior Johnson.
Speedway Associates will operate the speedway with an aggressive plan not only to re-start the track but to promote the deep roots that stock car racing holds in Wilkes County.
