Food Around The Track: Atlanta

The Varsity
An institution in Atlanta, the World’s Largest Drive-In has been serving customers since 1928. Locals, travelers, world leaders, and top athletes like Kurt Busch have all stopped at The Varsity to hear the wait staff say: “What’ll Ya Have? What’ll Ya Have?”
The answer is simple, a hot dog and a Coca-Cola. How you have your hot dog is your call, there is the naked dog all the way up to the chili, cheese, slaw dog…and every combination between. The fresh cut french fries are a must and if you’re not a hot dog eater, there are other options on the menu like hamburgers, chicken, salads and sandwiches.

If you are looking for a real southern breakfast a must is the world famous country ham and red-eye gravy, so tender you can cut it with a fork. The Silver Skillet is open for breakfast and lunch with classics like: grilled corned beef hash, biscuits and gravy and the Southern Breakfast: two center cut battered and fried pork chops, two eggs, grits and white gravy with a biscuit.

Other Favorites:

Southern Pit Bar-B-Que
McGhin’s Southern Pit Bar-B-W-Que is exactly what you would expect at a Georgia Bar-B-Que restaurant.   Fred and Barbara McGhin started cooking “que” in their house in 1984 and it became so popular they had to open a store in Griffin, Ga. The motto is “when I get hungry, I throw a fit if I can’t eat at Southern Pit.”
The barbecue pork and ribs are the standout; both moist, tender and smoky. Menus are available on small plates for those on a budget or for big eaters there’s the “Smoky Combo Feast” which is beef or pork, ribs and chicken.  The traditional “fixin’s” round out the meal.

Mary Mac’s Tea Room
Another “Bagman Favorite”, he says: “While there are a lot of ‘Southern Cooking’ places in The ATL, this is top of the list.”. Michael Stern of RoadFood.com wrote: “We lifted a fried chicken breast off the plate and bit into it. As the crust crunched, juices spurted everywhere. It had been a while since we had dined at Mary Mac’s, and we had forgotten just how moist the chicken is.”
Traditional Southern Cooking starts off a bowl of pot likker (southern style greens and corn bread) and can go in a number of directions. There is meatloaf, chicken and dumplings, roast pork and dressing and no matter what the main course is, the macaroni and cheese (shown below) is a must.

Coca Cola Still Partnering

COCA-COLA AND SPEEDWAY MOTORSPORTS TOAST
PARTNERSHIP EXTENSION

New Agreement Consolidates Relationship with Key Tracks Through 2015
ATLANTA, March 5, 2010 - Thirsty race fans taking in the action at
some of the most popular NASCARR racetracks can continue to enjoy an
ice-cold Coca-Cola for years to come. Speedway Motorsports, Inc. (SMI) and
Coca-Cola North America (CCNA) are extending their long-term partnership
through 2015, ensuring NASCAR fans who visit premier speedways in locations
such as Charlotte, Atlanta and Las Vegas can open a Coke and Open Happiness
as they cheer on their favorite drivers.
Under the terms of the new agreement, CCNA brands will continue as
the "Official Soft Drink," "Official Sparkling Beverage," "Official Water,
"Official Sports Drink" and "Official Enhanced Water" for six SMI tracks,
which include:
. Atlanta Motor Speedway (Hampton, GA)
. New Hampshire Motor Speedway (Loudon, NH)
. Infineon Raceway Speedway (Sonoma, CA)
. Las Vegas Motor Speedway (Las Vegas, NV)
. Charlotte Motor Speedway (Concord, NC)
. Texas Motor Speedway (Ft. Worth, TX)
The agreement also features title sponsorship of the Coca-Cola 600
-- the longest continuous sponsorship of any race in NASCAR -- at Charlotte
Motor Speedway through 2015.
"Coca-Cola and Speedway Motorsports share the same passion to
refresh and enhance the racing experience for fans," said Beatriz Perez,
Senior Vice President, Integrated Marketing, Coca-Cola North America. "We've
built a deep connection between Coca-Cola, NASCAR and its fans. Working
with our partners at SMI, we will continue to intensify that bond by
creating even more programs that bring fans closer to Coca-Cola and the
sport they love."
"For more than 25 years, we've worked together with Coca-Cola to
entertain and refresh fans at the world's greatest speedways, including one
of NASCAR's cornerstone events, the Coca-Cola 600 on Memorial Day Weekend at
Charlotte Motor Speedway," said Marcus Smith, President and Chief Operating
Officer of Speedway Motorsports, Inc. "Speedway Motorsports is pleased to
extend this partnership between Coca-Cola and six of our speedways where we
proudly serve Coca-Cola products along with the greatest racing
entertainment in the world."
The SMI partnership is a key part of Coca-Cola's overall role in
racing. The Coca-Cola NASCAR relationship, the association with a majority
of tracks, the Coca-Cola 600, the Coke Zero 400 and the drivers of the
Coca-Cola Racing Family create an ideal relationship between Coca-Cola, the
sport and fans. It offers a multi-faceted experience that connects
Coca-Cola with NASCAR fans at every level -- locally, nationally, at the
track, in store, at home and elsewhere.
Through this partnership extension, Coca-Cola and SMI will continue
to create programs that engage NASCAR fans at SMI tracks and in the local
markets and regions where the tracks are located. NASCAR-themed
advertising, packaging, promotions, at-track activations and
customer-specific programs will all be part of the mix designed to create
excitement among racing fans.
