Food Around The Track: Daytona

Crabby Joe’s
Located on the beach, just south of the Dunlawton Bridge, Crabby Joe’s is your basic “fish sandwich joint.” The fish sandwich is about what you would get at a number of places, but what sets Crabby Joe’s apart is the location. The restaurant is on the Sunglow Fishing Pier meaning dining is over the ocean.
Other specials include pasta dishes, steak dinners as well as a breakfast menu.

Porto Fino
“If you like Italian cuisine, owner George will make sure you get your food and your racing fix. Drivers have been eating here for years – just ask George, he will tell you. This is a favorite Allison family hangout. The eggplant parmesan is to die for.”
n Liz Allison, The Ultimate NASCAR Insider’s Track Guide

Porto Fino is nothing fancy, just good Italian Food. Don’t go expecting an extensive wine list or a high-end atmosphere; it’s casual and very proud of that fact.
The restaurant opened in 1978 and serves pasta, pizza, veal, vegetarian dishes, chicken, Italian seafood and steaks.

Port Orange Steakhouse
Wood-fired steaks, ribs, chicken, seafood and chops headline the Port Orange Steakhouse. The comfortable atmosphere restaurant also has burgers, sandwiches, soups and salads as well as a full bar.
Freelance photographer David Griffin – not one to shy away from a good meal – suggests you: “must have vested shrimp for a starter”.
What is the vested shrimp? It is “large Gulf shrimp with fresh horseradish and wrapped with honey-peppered bacon, served with pineapple relish, honey mustard and BBQ sauce.”

Favorite Racing Theme’s Places

The Brickyard Bar and Grill
Since 1992, “Renny” Miles has operated the favorite located just five minutes from the track. This A-framed restaurant is filled with racing memorabilia, some historic and others the current-day colors.
The burgers are outstanding and come highly recommended. Sandwiches, chicken wings and a large variety of other items are sure to fill you up as well.

Address: 747 International Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach
Phone: (386) 253-2270

Racing’s North Turn Beach Bar and Grill
This favorite site is located where the north turn of the beach course took cars from the beach to A1A from 1936 through 1958. To this day, it’s not uncommon for a current driver or racing legend to stop in and look at the extensive photo library collection, many items donated by the legends themselves.
From the food perspective, this is a great beach bar with open air dinning and wonderful food – everything from seafood snacks to sandwiches to steaks and pasta. And with live music it’s a great place to spend a few hours with racing friends.
Also, a special event during Speedweeks: on Thursday, Feb. 11 racing legend Dick Fleck – A Racing Kid from Pennsylvania – will be signing copies of his biography book.

Address: 4511 S. Atlantic Ave., Ponce Inlet, Fla.

Other Favorites:

Old Spanish Sugar Mill Grill
Located in DeLeon Springs State Park, this restaurant opened in 1961 and has been going strong since.  It’s an old sugar mill, complete with grinding water wheel giving it a great atmosphere with many activities available at the state park to escape the hustle of Speedweeks.
Sandwiches made on whole grain bread and a complete breakfast menu is available; but, it’s the pancakes! From their website: Each of our tables are equipped with a griddle and we bring you pitchers of homemade pancake batters (both a stone ground mixture of five different flours and an unbleached white) and you pour them on and flip them over right at the table. You may order blueberries, bananas, peanut butter, pecans, chocolate chips, apples or apple sauce to create whatever sort of pancakes you choose.

Address: 601 Ponce DeLeon Blvd., DeLeon Spring Fla. (located inside DeLeon Springs State Park)
Phone: (386) 985-5644

JB’s Fish Camp
You know you are close to the water when a restaurant sells bait and tackle, that’s the case with this favorite. JB’s has seating along the river -- where you can view a spectacular sunset -- or inside, live music and two fully stocked bars.
The attraction here is seafood though – all varieties done many different ways. Blue crabs, crab cakes, “pampered and petted” clams are some of the highlights as well as great fish meals and sandwiches. And, don’t forget their award winning chowder as well.

Sunrise Breakfast Casserole

Sunrise Breakfast Casserole

We tried this from the "Pit Stop in a Southern Kitchen" by Martha Earnhardt and Carol Gordon Bickford. Both ladies have different cooking styles so you'll find a variety of dishes made with the simpliest of ingredients.  Along with the recipes comes some great stories about racing and their families.  This recipe in particular, is a great recipe for the weekend or even dinner and it's very easy to make.

1 package Italian sausage
2 packages potatoes O'Brien hasbrowns
10 eggs
3 cups milk
1 1/2 teaspoons ground mustard
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
2 cups calsa or picante sauce, optional

Place sausage in baking pan and bake at 375 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes or unitl sausage is no longer pink, turning once.  Drain and slice in to 1/4 icnch coins; set aside.
Meanwhile, brown hash browns.
In a large bowl, combine eggs, milk, mustard, salt and pepper.  Add sausage, hash browns, and cheese.  Mix well.  Pour into a greased 13x9x2 inch baking dish.  Cover and refrigerate overnight.  Remove from refrigerator 30 minutes before baking.  Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for 65 to 70 minutes or until golden brown and set.  Let stand 10 minutes before serving.  Serve with salsa or picante if desired.  Serves twelve.
Goody's, Tums and Martinsville Still Together

Goody's, TUMS Sign Two-Year Renewal Of Martinsville Speedway Sprint Cup Races

One of the most enduring relationships in NASCAR grew a little stronger today with the announcement that Goody’s® Headache Powders and TUMS® are renewing their sponsorship of the spring and fall Sprint Cup races at Martinsville Speedway through the 2012 season.

Goody’s sponsorship of the spring race will continue with the Goody’s Fast Pain Relief 500 while TUMS will extend its sponsorship of the fall race with the TUMS Fast Relief 500.

"I am overjoyed that these two iconic brands are extending their partnership with Martinsville Speedway, a race track we have been coming to for Goody’s since 1977. Our partnership with Martinsville is unique in the sport, bringing together great brands with a classic American speedway to present true race fans with "old school racing" at its best,” said Darren Singer, Vice-President of Marketing, OTC Wellness, GSK. “For over 33 years, stock car racing has been the centerpiece of the Goody's Headache Powders business, signified by our lifetime partnership with "The King," Richard Petty, and our commitment to Martinsville Speedway. There is no better analogy for the fast relief Goody's provides for your worst headaches, than the speed and intensity of short-track racing at Martinsville.

“In 2008, we introduced another of our fast relief brands to Martinsville race fans – TUMS, a classic American brand. Based on the great results we are seeing in our Sprint Cup race sponsorships and activation, we are renewing our sponsorship of both Sprint Cup races with Martinsville Speedway through 2012. With Goody's sponsoring the Goody's Fast Relief 500 in the spring, and TUMS sponsoring the TUMS Fast Relief 500 in the fall Chase race, these events will showcase our commitment to Martinsville and loyal NASCAR fans!"

The sponsorship extensions are another chapter in a decades-long history between GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Consumer Healthcare (makers of Goody’s and TUMS) and the historic half-mile oval. The two joined forces in 1983 when Goody’s Headache Powder first sponsored the Goody’s 500 at Martinsville Speedway. Since then Goody’s and TUMS have sponsored a total of 23 races in several different divisions at Martinsville Speedway.

TUMS, the number one antacid in America, has been the sponsor of the fall event at Martinsville since 2008.

“There aren’t many folks in racing who can say they have been together as long as Martinsville Speedway and GSK Consumer Healthcare,” said Martinsville Speedway President W. Clay Campbell. “But it doesn’t surprise me. It’s a great combination. We all are focused on the same thing, keeping our customers happy.”

This year’s Goody’s Fast Pain Relief 500 is scheduled for Sunday, March 28 and the TUMS Fast Relief 500 is set for Sunday, October 24.
