Food Around The Track: Where to Eat in Dover

Sambo’s Tavern

Sambo’s is one of a handful of “must visits” on the NASCAR travelling tour. Crabs are the specialty and never disappoint. The crabcakes are broiled, tasty and the size of baseballs. The shrimp are just perfectly seasoned and for a started the seafood bisque is the best on the circuit.
The place is nothing fancy and newspaper is your tablecloth. Located right on the water in the marshy flat coastal area, Sambo’s is not only great for the food but great for seeing some of NASCAR’s most popular characters.

Helen’s Famous Sausage House

Helen’s first opened in 1985 with the desire to build a small, family-based business using famous sausage that’s homemade from a recipe that goes back four generations. Mission accomplished as Helen’s is now a very popular breakfast and lunch stop for locals as well as those travelling through.
Of course, the specialty is sausage and be warned if you order a sandwich it means two large links of sausage unless you specify you only want one. And, on the first bite the explosion of flavor will make you glad you stopped. Also of interested is the pork chop sandwich featuring a bone-in slab of pork on white bread. The fork is there if you don’t want to use the bread as a mitt to hold this monster.

Countrie Eatery

Our friends at www.RoadFood.com rave about the breakfasts at Countrie Eatery. Buttermilk pancakes (filled with bananas or blueberries), two kinds of French toast (cinnamon break or sunflower bread), and scrapple are just a couple of the favorites from the large menu.
Formerly the Blue Coat Pancake House, this restaurant opened in 1988 as a casual option with the great food from the upscale sister operation – the Blue Coat Inn. For 37 years the Dover family has been serving up great food and that continues at their non-named Countrie Eatery.
One note: this is a cash-only restaurant.
